GOP reveals weakness in leadership, agenda
House Republican leaders don’t know how to take Democrats’ victory
HARRISBURG, July 23 – The House Republican leadership team revealed its weakness on Friday when it issued to the press and public a weekly roundup that contained two diametrically opposed options for “taking credit” on the budget package approved by the General Assembly last week.
House Democratic Campaign Committee Chairman Todd Eachus, D-Luzerne, described it as bizarre but not surprising, and said the statement exposed House Republican leadership’s inability to lead, to make decisions and to guide its own rank-and-file members.
“On one hand they want to take credit because they know the House Democrats delivered a solid budget package that fulfills the needs of the Commonwealth without raising taxes,” Eachus said. “On the other hand, they want to play the loyal opposition and find something, anything to cry about. It reveals the weakness House Republicans have demonstrated since voters put House Democrats into the majority.”
The GOP statement, in part, cheered the historic transportation package brokered by House Democrats and said it “puts PA on the road to recovery.” In the same breath it said the plan is “risky” and “will likely backfire.”
“Just bizarre,” Eachus said. “Their inability to articulate a strong caucus position and lead their caucus is exposed.”
Eachus said the House Democrats, on the other hand, stood strong and together throughout the entire budget development, defeating House GOP attempts to obstruct the process, embarrass the governor, and stall progress.
